I may have done it again
my mother invited 3 people for tomorrow. 4 people with her, and 6 people with us (we may or may not spend most of the time with them, but we do plan to eat our share of the food :D )
I may have already prepared 1 kg of rye flour and 0.5 kg of white flour, and have plans for a dough with 1 kg of durum flour this evening. Plus there is a 0.5 kg of white flour dough that will be cooked for dinner this evening.
0.5 kg of flour per person is reasonable, right? :D

I used to play The Forest on no-enemies mode because at the time it was about as close as anyone was ever getting to a survival/crafting game with a photorealistic style. (Unfortunately and annoyingly, couldn't really progress much without enemies for resources. I haven't looked into whether Sons of the Forest has a similar mode, mostly because I know my PC won't be able to handle it.)
Some games also just have extremely annoying difficulty settings where 'more difficult' just equates to 'enemies have more health and you have less resources'. Or where the difficulty setting is for everything - I appreciate games where combat difficulty can be separated from puzzles and/or resource gathering, because I don't mind if the puzzles make me work for it a bit.

Tonight at 5:19 my phone rung. it was my mother's phone number.
The call went something like:
me> hello? hello?
me> hello?
her> what? how?
me> hello?
her> my phone called you as I tried to check the time
luckily @Diego Roversi was reading in bed because he couldn't sleep, and I had just half-opened one eye enough to see the light from his ebook reader (and then closed it again, but had not completely fallen asleep yet), so it wasn't as traumatic as it could have been.
Then this morning we were all in her living room, her phone was on the table, I could see that *she wasn't touching the phone* and her phone called me again!

Does anyone know of an online library of open license, interposed, print-ready books?
I've been bookbinding copies of copyleft books you can only get as PDFs, and helping some authors and a game dev group I know make their books available as binding-ready files.
Is there already a site for them somewhere? If not, it's something I'll try to do, eventually
I know prepping the files is part of the fun but if it lowers the barrier for entry for bookbinding I think it's worth it

fwiw, here's the open source tool that I use that makes the prepping very easy: momijizukamori.github.io/bookb…
No need to install anything, it does the PDF processing right inside your browser. No servers involved either, works offline.
@foosel that's funny, that's exactly the one I use! (It's nice to know that part matches even if I have a ton to learn elsewhere) I was amazed at how easy it made things.
I've only done one TTRPG in the past (they published my interposed files and someone made one!) I've been binding my softcover books as if they're hardcovers, signatures and all, and gluing them into canvas printed with a plotter printer. How did you do the cover for yours? The glossy paper/cardstock looks very professional!
Oh, softcover binding with signatures that way is something I still need to try 😀
The cover on my core of The Perilous Void was just some 200gsm card stock I have here, originally bought for printing photos on. It has a bit of a matte finish. I printed it and the text block (which I used basic 80gsm paper for) on my colour laser.
Most of the books I so far case-bound as hard covers with cloth, and then used the vinyl cutter to put the title on cover and spine.
I have some larger books full of random tables (Starsmith and Ancient Wonders) that are too thick to ring bind, so I'm looking into binding options that lay almost as flat as ring binding for them - nicer to look up things on a D100 table that way imho.
Want to try Coptic and Sewn Board for that.
@foosel Prepping the files is a barrier - I wasn't aware of that Bookbinder tool, that looks pretty neat.
I wrote up the steps I used of prepping an epub file for print, some it it may be of interest for this exercise, I used command line tools:
hotelexistence.ca/printing-and…
If I were to do it again, I'd definitely check out that Bookbinder, it looks like it would get around all the command line steps.

The words 'fiction' and 'dough' derive from the same root.
They stem from a Proto-Indo-European root that meant "to shape" and "to mould".
'Fiction' came to English through Latin and French. Its meaning now denotes something that's shaped by the mind.
'Dough', something that's kneaded, was inherited from Germanic.

As for the things I soldered yesterday night, half of them aren't in use because the waterproof box we wanted to use is too small :(
We may find another box, or buy one in the next few weeks.
For the time being, we've used some dupont cables to connect the main sensor to the ESP32C3 board, and got an *interesting* behaviour: the board was sending data from the sensor, but it was *always the same value*. Data for the internal battery level sensor was changing at every measurement, as expected.
We opened the stevenson box, changed the sensor with another identical one. same behaviour.
We opened the waterproof box to bring the board inside and do more tests, and found that the dupont cable for the sensor ground was disconnected. But it was still managing to send data, only it was the *wrong* data.
Reconnected the ground, it seems to be working.

Yesterday and today, the whole of Spain, Portugal and parts of France, and possibly as per some reports, parts of Italy and Belgium lost their power inexplicably. Italy and Belgium reports might have been spurious. This happened about 12:30 local time here in Spain.
The power was out for about 14 hours here, a bit less for some areas as they brought up the grid piece by piece.
The mobile base stations were the first to go.
We have solar panels and batteries which carry over the night, and it was a sunny day, so we maintained power here in the house over the event.
This Mastodon instance was inaccessible for 11 hours, because apparently the fiber optic substations lost their emergency battery power after 6 hours or so, and the final internet connection we had was cut.
There is still no conclusive determination for what happened or why. It seems the most likely explanation currently is some sort of an atmospheric event causing resonance in the electric grid.
elpais.com/economia/2025-04-28…
At night, our house was pretty much the only one with power. The other lights visible in the photo are largely cars and flashlights. We still have our Christmas lights in the yard...
The stars were well visible in the sky.
So, lessons learned:
1. Apocalypses (or pseudo-apocalypses) don't necessarily come with a bang. They come with an eery silence and darkness, and no one knows what is happening.
2. I am still unable to play my local Plex series with the good TV, because everything seems to require internet connectivity for no good reasons. I can play them with my phone and on laptop (but with proprietary codecs and without hardware accelerations it's in practice impossible). Playstation Plex simply refuses to function without internet.
3. Don't run multiple high power cooking appliances at once because it overloads the inverter.
4. The house water pump isn't in the emergency power circuit, which is inconvenient and needs fixing.
5. Need to have physical keys for things easily available, and not hidden in places you'd look in the last.
6. Even if the local internet networks would still work, if the global networks aren't available the ISPs happily just cut off all the networks and don't even try to maintain just local networks for convenient local emergency communications purposes. Ditto for electricity.

POLARVIDE modular jacket
Posted on April 28, 2025
Tags: madeof:atoms, craft:sewing
Years ago I made myself a quick dressing gown from a white fleece IKEA throw and often wore it in the morning between waking up and changing into day clothes.
One day I want to make myself a fancy victorian wrapper, to use in its place, but that’s still in the early planning stage, and will require quite some work.
Then last autumn I discovered that the taxes I owed to the local lord (who provides protection from mice and other small animals) included not just a certain amount of kibbles, but also some warm textiles, and the dressing gown (which at this time was definitely no longer pristine) had to go.
For a while I had to do without a dressing gown, but then in the second half of this winter I had some time for a quick machine sewing project. I could not tackle the big victorian thing, but I still had a second POLARVIDE throw from IKEA (this time in a more sensible dark grey) I had bought with sewing intents.
The fabric in a throw isn’t that much, so I needed something pretty efficient, and rather than winging it as I had done the first time I decided I wanted to try the Modular Jacket from A Year of Zero Waste Sewing (which I had bought in the zine instalments: the jacket is in the March issue).
After some measuring and decision taking, I found that I could fit most of the pieces and get a decent length, but I had no room for the collar, and probably not for the belt nor the pockets, but I cut all of the main pieces. I had a possible idea for a contrasting collar, but I decided to start sewing the main pieces and decide later, before committing to cutting the other fabric.
As I was assembling the jacket I decided that as a dressing gown I could do without the collar, and noticed that with the fraying-free plastic fleece I didn’t really need the front facings, so I cut those in half lengthwise, pieced them together, and used them as binding to finish the front end.
Since I didn’t have enough fabric for the belt I also skipped the belt loops, but I have been wearing this with random belts and I don’t feel the need for them anyway. I’ve also been thinking about adding a button just above the bust and use that to keep it closed, but I’m still not 100% sure about it.
Another thing I still need to do is to go through the few scraps of fleece that are left and see if I can piece together a serviceable pocket or two.
Because of the size of the fabric, I ended up having quite long sleeves: I’m happy with them because they mean that I can cover my hands when it’s cold, or fold them back to make a nice cuff.
If I’ll make a real jacket with this patter I’ll have to take this in consideration, and either make the sleeves shorter or finish the seam in a way that looks nice when folded back.
Will I make a real jacket? I’m not sure, it’s not really my style of outer garment, but as a dressing gown it has already been used quite a bit (as in, almost every morning since I’ve made it :) ) and will continue to be used until too worn to be useful, and that’s a good thing.

After just a few years of procrastination, I’ve given a wash ofgit-filter-repo to the repository where I keep my hexagonal sticker designs, removed a few failed experiments and stuff with dubious licensing and was able to finally publish it among my public git repositories
This repo includes the template I’m using, most of the stickers I’ve had printed, some that have been published elsewhere and have been printed by other people, as well as some that have never been printed and I may or may not print in the future.
The licensing details are in the metadata of each file, and mostly depend on the logos or cliparts used. Most, but not all, are under a free culture license.
My server is not setup to correctly serve the SVG files, yet: downloading them (from the “plain” links) should work, but I need to fix the content type that is provided. I will probably procrastinate doing it for quite some time, but eventually it will be done. Of course cloning the repository from the public https URL also works.
BRB, need to add MOAR stickerses.

Most of those Signal fans probably refer to a certain blog post by a certain hobby cryptographer. [edit to add: specifically not linked or named because that person doesn't like "evangelists" for messengers-that-aren't-Signal near them. I respect that.]
One argument there holds water, though: OMEMO use is opt-in, and with opportunities to opt-out.
That's different from what Signal offers, and a foot-gun that is way too simple to trigger. (On the down-side, Signal can't opt-out of data being processed in the US. Trade-offs! 🤷)
All the fluff about this-algorithm-or-that or dependency management in Conversations (their solution is dependabot, unvetted-updates-as-a-service. really?!?) is minor compared to that one aspect.
The expectation should be that stuff is E2EE, with carefully (and loudly announced) exceptions where reasonable (when using XMPP as an internal bus protocol, you might be able to get away without it; when running a client on retro gear, you might get better mileage without the crypto overhead, too - but these must be exceptions, not semi-automatic fallbacks)

Is there a non-US marketplace where one can find sewing patterns? In other words, not Etsy.

Asked my wife and she doesn't know a marketplace, but buys from a few sellers. She suggests
- ellieandmac.com/pages/about-el…
- pattydoo.de/en (mostly in German however)
- stylearc.com/
She mostly buys pdf patterns and then does magic with a projector. Honestly, pure magic...
@Liminal witch 🧙♀️ Sarah I don't know of a marketplace, but I can recommend at least one indie designer and a couple other hopefully useful websites
the one indie designer I've bought (and actually sewn¹ :D ) more pattern from is scroop patterns / the dreamstress, who is not in the US (she's in NZ), and sells directly from her site
scrooppatterns.com/
of course that's just a handful of specific looks
There is another indie I've bought something from, Liz Haywood from AU, but she sells via etsy. :(
Then there is freesewing.org/ (free as in #freeSoftWear) that aren't traditional patterns, but made-to-measure ones and work in a bit of a different way. They have published freesewing.org/blog/us-and-eu/ on the topic of getting away from the US, and are here on the fediverse.
And lastly I follow a blog (the author is in the UK) that does reviews of free patterns: many are from the websites of indie designers (other from bigger sites) and may be a good source for additional sources of patterns.
¹ they aren't a lot because I enjoy drafting my own patterns

the cartridge pleated skirt is almost done, only requires a patch on a small tear I couldn't cut around, but I need some sewing thread in a different colour from what I already have.
the bodice is done, I've worn it today, it's good (other than a small change I want to make to the pattern for the next time).
When I'll have some time with no rain at a time when I can take pictures I will, and then there will be a blog post.
So, now, I suddenly found myself with no #handsewing project in progress¹, and that can't do!
¹ ok, there is one. I don't want to pick that one up right now
