After trying SEVERAL #distros on the headless #Macbook, I ended up back on #Fedora #Cinnamon. So far it has been the only distro that I have found that does not make me jump through hoops to get the #WiFi working while not also breaking something else.
Don’t get me wrong Fedora Cinnamon is great, I was just looking to run something a little more fun and “exotic.”
So I somehow #borked the headless Mac when I installed the WiFi drivers. By borked I mean I somehow killed the Ethernet connection and had poopy WiFi speeds.
Thus I am gonna try something new…
I switched over the 2011 #headless #Macbook pro over to #AlpineLinux and oh boy is it snappy. Like hot dang is it quick.
Setting up WiFi was a bit of a pain, but totes worth it 😎
On the Mango Pi Pro, I popped out the sd card running #Ununtu server with #LXDE and put in a different sd card with the “official” #Armbian ISO with #XFCE from the Mango Pi website.
After way too long finagling the keyboard, mouse, and power inputs, I have updated the packages on the OS (#Jammy). Tomorrow I will update to #Noble and go from there.
Also I will test sound output tomorrow as I trim the fat of preinstalled programs/apps.
Here is the desktop set up on the Mango Pi Pro #RISCV #SBC. As mentioned earlier it is running minimal #LXDE on top of a vanilla install of #Ubuntu server 24.10.
I have peeled back a few things, such as audio since the basic Ubuntu install does not have the stuff to run #HDMI #audio (I could do look into this more but eh). I will do some more tinkering with the ISO from the official Mango Pi website. Lets see how that goes 🤞
I got video working on the Mango Pi Quad! Granted, it is not full screen.... and it is running at 480p... I got it working with minor frame drops.
It seems suiting that the first videos I watch on this lil #SBC are videos from @ActionRetro
Let's all work to keep ewaste alive!
Currently I am playing around with the Mango Pi Quad (#ARM) and the Mango Pi Pro (#RISCV) and doing a few comparisons.
Both have minimal #LXDE set ups and both have identical 1gig ram modules. On the Quad I am running #Debian 12 and on the Pro I am running #Ubuntu 24.10. So not necessarily and apple to apples compassion. But what I find interesting is that there is only a 13ish percent difference in #RAM use. The Quad after start up hovers around 25.1% ram use while the Pro hovers around 38.9%.
Maybe RISCV will catch up sooner than later with ARM. More random thoughts to come. Both are fun lil #SBC if you can get a hold of them.
Hey y’all! I hope everyone is having a good day on the #Fediverse, especially my peeps over at polymaths.social
